The Second Niger Bridge
The Second Niger Bridge:
Is a key national infrastructure located in the south eastern part of Nigeria, spanning over the river niger to connect Asaba city and the Ogbaru area in Anambra state of Nigeria.
The bridge which was contracted and engineered by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC, financed by the Nigeria federal government and maintained by the federal ministry of works.
The second Niger Bridge which is 1.63km long; furnished with other ancillary infrastructure, including a 10.3kmhighway, Owerri interchange and a toll station; all at Obosi city, Anambra state.
Costing about N336 Billion. commenced in September, 2018. Inaugurated in October, 2022. It opened for local traffic on December, 2022. And scheduled for official handover and usage on 15 May, 2023.
The Second Niger Bridge was contracted using the cantilever method, while the ramp bridges where constructed using the incremental launching method. The structure consist of two parallel prestressed concrete box girder bridges, each 14.5m wide.With coordinates 6°07'12"N6°45'18"E. 14,000 tonnes of steel were processed. 250,000 tonnes of concrete were processed. 1,468 workers were employed on the construction site itself. 8,700,000 man-hours were accounted for and yet 2.5 years were worked without a fatal accident.
The Second Niger Bridge is one of the iconic infrastructures constructed in Nigeria within the last few years and is believed to support and enhance the economic activities in the south eastern part of the country.
